In other words, a summary of the past weekend! (Gee, what were you thinking?) The weather was predicted to be hot on Saturday and really hot on Sunday with the possibility of a thunderstorm late on Saturday. That's pretty good, but I don't recall anyone saying anything about a tornado!

I've never seen the faire close early. Dave W., our head of security, has been there for 16 years -- since the place was King Richards Faire, and was a patron before that and he said he's seen it close up to half an hour early, but they've never evacuated patrons at 1700 before! I was working the main gate so I got to deal with a lot of people asking "Hey, I thought you were open 'rain or shine'?" I gave out a nice version of "Yes, you moron, 'rain or shine', but not tornado. Now get out!" None of the regulars really gave us any trouble -- then knew how unusual this was.

Anyway, at least the rain cooled things off for the rest of the evening!

Sunday morning, of course, started out blazingly hot and only went up from there. I think that was the lightest crowd I've ever seen at the faire. Shop owners were letting employees go home for the day by 1300. I think the only thing that kept us from having a record number of heat-related medicals was the record number of people that stayed away. (It's also been suggested to me that perhaps it was hot enough that people were actually taking real precautions against the heat.) I was pretty sore by the end of the day and had a bit of trouble standing up by the time I got home. I was fine on Monday, though, so I think it was mostly the heat getting to me.

Both days I got to be at the Participant Gate when the elephants came on site -- that's really cool!

All in all: A hot weekend and a very unusual one, but over all a very satisfying one.
