Well I was making pretty good progress today until I used the wrong function and instead of inserting a block of data into a workbook page I deleted and replaced the entire thing. Oops, indeed. Luckily I have a not terribly old backup and most of the work of the last week has been planning or working in a different file. Yes, I have to recreate a lot of the tedious bits that I did yesterday, but at least I know what and where to rebuild and I won't have to spend as much time on it.

I also have a nice new backup in no less than two places.

Sounds about like my week. I have been converting calculations in Crystal Reports to account for the new non-USD accounts we are getting and am finding that each report has between 2 and 8 paramter combinations that I have to test for 5 different scenarios!

*whine*
I'm killing trees!

*snerk*
Well, that and I am bloody sick of looking at this data!

I'm starting to seriously consider some sort of RAID setup at home to backup the computers there ... although that would involve finding space to do it. Hmm ... tape might be an option there, I'll have to think about that.

I think of this, of course, after I lost the partition table from the 500G drive will all my MP3s on it, including about 60G of Dr. Demento shows and other stuff that I have no idea how I would ever get back if I can't recover the drive. (That's a work in progress.)

In today's episode, watch the vba programmer get a sinking feeling as he recalls about two minutes two late the difference between "DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet acExport" and "DoCmd.OutputTo" ...

I've got a device I can recommend (if you're taking recommendations). It's a DLink DNS 323. Headless, runs an embedded Linux. I bought one, popped in 2x320 gb SATA drives, set 'em up for RAID 1 (it'll also do RAID 0/JBOD, but it looked like you were looking for security over size), and was off and running as soon as it was done setting up the mirror.

Out of the box, you can set up network shares via SMB (SAMBA) or FTP. It is also hackable (did I mention that it runs Linux :) ), and you can set up AFS and other handy things relatively easily (I've not gotten around to setting up AFS yet, as Leopard plays pretty well with SMB, but I do have a Subversion repository set up). You can also set up an iTunes server with a point and click as well, so you can centralize all of the Dr. D.

There are also other bells and whistles that come with it, as well as some that they advertise that don't work or don't work right. Let me know if you're interested in a full rundown, and I'll be happy to give a full review (either here or offline). Heck, I may even get around to posting it on my journal.

You can get a bare device for $179 from NewEgg. But, with 500 gb SATA drives going for next-to-nothing these days, it's a really inexpensive insurance policy.

I one time deletled 100 hours of work...
