DucKon 2008

I'm sufficiently recovered from DucKon to try and put words to screen, at least. I'll start out with saying that I must have had a good time since I not only didn't run away screaming once it was all over, but I've actively been writing up panel ideas for next year as well as already contacting some panelists. Oh yes, and I seem to have gone completely insane at some point ...
First, there are the convention notes. As I said, I really enjoyed myself this year. I thought all of the panels with which I was involved went really well. The only one that wasn't at least moderately well attended was the one on Sunday morning at 10:00 ... and I'll freely admit that if I wasn't actually on that one I probably wouldn't have been there either! (Although it should be noted that we did gain audience as the hour progressed.)
Some specifics:
"Stop Talking About Comic Books Or I'll Kill You" -- Yes, this is named after the Ookla The Mok song of the same name, but unfortunately I was unable to obtain any of the members of the group for the panel. As it turned out, this really wasn't a problem. I'm a huge fan and proponent of comics and the medium, but I really have to say that
billroper made the panel fly! He not only knew characters and story lines, he possesses an in-depth knowledge of the editors, writers, and artists behind the scenes and provided some real insight into the story behind some of the changes that I certainly didn't know. Thanks a million, Bill! I should also note that for most of the panel he and I were the only guys in the room -- it's nice to see solid evidence that comic book geeks aren't just men anymore.
Sex Toys of the Future -- Wow. Friday night at 23:00 and it was standing room only. I honestly don't remember a lot of details, aside from the fact that it was a great discussion and that I kept getting distracted by
rileybear67 in a really hot outfit! (There's a good reason I almost didn't make it to the panel and an equally good reason that we left after the official end time, but before everyone else left the room!)
Random Babbling -- You know, I know when to just let others talk! Between Uncle Kage and
ericcoleman, I swear there was enough entertainment for everyone without Fan GOH Dave McCarthy or myself saying a word. (OK, Dave contributed quite a bit himself, but I was mostly there as a moderator anyway and I mostly just let them run with it ... I wasn't about to stop that!)
The Labyrinth -- Thanks to
merseine0613 for this one. I wasn't on the panel, but I did stick around in the audience and enjoyed myself. I certainly got the feeling that it was well received and I'm keeping my rubbings! Thanks sweetie!
Secondly, I had a great time with friends and sweeties. I once again found confirmation that most of fandom is separated by two degrees at most! Breakfasts and dinners with both
bookwurm and
rileybear67 made me one very happy woof! I picked up some lovely new artwork from the art show, some new stuff from the dealer's room and made some contacts on some neat new things for later. The three of us wandered down to the Chocolate Ritual just in time to end up as part of the circle instead of just watching. I'm not sure how I fell about playing the role of Elder ... (particularly since I'm a few years younger than the one playing Father.)
My only regret for the weekend was the stuff I missed; the singing tesla coils, some of my favorite filkers, building a blinkie, and the numerous friends that got a quick wave or hug instead of a sit-down chat ... but that's the way it always is because you never have time to do everything! It sure beats the heck out of the conventions I've been to where I sat around trying to find something that interested me ...
Last, I obviously lost my mind sometime over the weekend. On Monday, I saw an email from
ctrlalttabby letting us know that she needs to back down from being Gaming Chair next year. (I can certainly understand, having a three year old certainly looks like a lot of work to me!) So I wasn't completely surprised when
qnofhrt contacted me and asked me if I would take over the position. I agreed on the caveat that I will help with the organization of schedules, games, and events, but I could shift the on-site work to helpers. Yep, I requested minions! Bwahahaha ... (This also leaves me available for Odd Duck panels and "other" activities!)
I don't know if a fun time was had by all, but I know I went away happy!
